BSc from the University of Toronto, and an MSC and PhD from Queen’s University, all in the field of Geology.

Dr. Janet King is Chair of the NSERC PermafrostNet Board of Directors, Vice Chair of the Canadian Light Source Board and Member of the CSPC Board.  Janet began her career with the federal Public Service as a Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada, focusing on geological field research in the Northwest Territories. She subsequently took on increasingly senior management positions, with responsibilities for diverse areas; geoscience partnerships, health products and food safety, life sciences, services and tourism, sector development, and western economic diversification. She returned to a northern focus with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada leading northern policy, legislation, regulation and program delivery across Canada’s North, and subsequently leading the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. Janet also was responsible for launching the Laboratories Canada Initiative, focused on the renewal of federal science infrastructure.  She retired from the federal Public Service in 2020.
